Our Team met with the Yowee Advocacy Group to assess progress since the Community Legal Empowerment Training and the formation of the 15-person community advocacy committee from the training. Key outcomes from the discussions included the community confirming a MoU with the company for the first time ever, committing to paving their community road twice yearly, providing scholarships for local students, and hiring 50% of workers from the affected communities. Community leaders stressed the necessity of establishing a community account to manage funds transparently under the MoU, while scholarships will improve access to quality education for children in these mining-affected communities.
To facilitate communication, our team provided a $5 Stretch card for quick emergency contact whenever they need us. This progress underscores the power of community advocacy in turning training into action, holding companies accountable, and securing benefits for local people, promoting dignity, equity, and sustainable transformation in Liberia.
